It would appear there is no stopping Facebook at the moment. Despite the global media’s love affair with Twitter at the moment, Facebook is still the undisputed king of social media. They have just surpassed the 300 million user mark, which is up from 250 million users in July, equating to around a 20% growth in just less than three months which truly is staggering. So if Facebook were a country, it would be about the same size as the USA, or to put it another way, almost 5% of the world’s population has a Facebook account.
So, we’re agreed, Facebook is pretty big. However, the really big news as far as they are concerned is that they now have a positive cash flow, which means they are genuinely looking like they might (finally) turn a profit. If Facebook can keep this sustainable growth going they are surely going to become an even more attractive proposition for investment which could ultimately spell trouble for Twitter. As Facebook continues to adapt and evolve, can Twitter keep pace? How long can they continue to operate without generating significant revenue themselves? With a projected figure of around 18 million users for the end of 2009, Twitter is lagging well behind in the user stakes. It’s a fast moving world and we can expect to see further major develops in the social media sphere over the coming months.
