IE6 market share drops like a stone

Sep 23 09 - 2:36PMJames Wylie, Account Director Technology
Since July, YouTube have been informing IE6 visitors that they will no longer be supporting IE6 and offering them links to alternative browsers.  This has caused a huge drop in market share from 24% to less than 14%.

There is now only one way to go for IE6, so if your organisation is still using it now is the time to switch.

About time! Whilst it is definitely understandable for major organisations to be reluctant to jump to using a new browser until it is well and truly proven and free of bugs, being TWO versions behind is not very good. There have been some major advances in browser technology since IE6, and making website developers continue to have to support old browsers can seriously hamper innovation online. This is aside from the extra costs associated with ensuring designs work in this browser, which does not adhere to many current web design standards.

The best wasy to find the latest browser versions is to search on Google. I would recommend Internet Explorer 8 or Firefox 3.

Whereas IE7 and IE8 have improved the user experience and made the life of developers and designers much easier they both luck in innovation. Support for HTML5 and CSS3 is poor (if any).

Well, it's about time that one of the large players did something about - just need to see Facebook, Twitter and MySpace do the same and then in maybe, oh a year, we can finally put that beast to bed!
