Is the UK employment market "recovering"?

Sep 10 09 - 10:13AMNadia Owen, Business Communications Marketing
According to monthly research by KPMG and the REC, yes.

Does it mean the recession is finally disappearing? Not necessarily.

Is it just me who thinks the pairing between KPMG and the REC is a bit odd? Possibly.

Thank you to the BBC web portal for covering this piece of industry news. Given that they have readily admitted that their economists are "um"ing and "ah"ing about whether or not we can expect a secondary dip in the recession, it appears that these gents in suits who are paid abhorrently high salaries to play a game of twister with their economic predictions have about as much of an idea of what's going on as what I do.

Unemployment in London continues to rise, yet we see catchphrases like "confident" and "improvements" thrown around when the reality is otherwise. Look, there's even a graph to support my claim.

What are my conclusions about joblessness in the UK at the moment? The world has not completely fallen apart. Yesterday was 09.09.09 and the world didn't spontaneously combust. Life goes on; agencies and businesses still need staff; there are loads of jobs being advertised.

Lots of faith in the analysts and economists of the world you have there Nadia! :)

A think-tank for the Guardian has recently announced that the UK is now out of the recession. I wonder what the Daily Mail has to say about that?

The actual report over at the REC actually states a "marginal" increase in perm and temp vacancies. Hardly the recovery we've been waiting for.

Any kind of good news is great no matter how marginal. But will it create enough confidence for people who are currently in roles to look elsewhere? maybe not. I think all we need is 3 months of good forcasts and figures, then people will start looking so if the media report on the positives until November then I think January and February could see a marked improvement. Saying that clients behaviours may have changed, so this may effect the speed of recovery for some recruitment agencies.

Amen to that Stewart. We need solid stats of substantial amounts. The risk being run currently is that with all these negligible stats being published, the general population will no longer feel they are being provided with reputable information and they will lose trust in news channels. What happens when all the trust and market authority is gone? People don't want to be played by The Man.

UK employment market improving ???????? This was obviously written by swomebody that is in job-for-life employment & has not had the need to really search for REAL work !!! The majority of jobs being advertised are for Utilities, Double Glazing, or other non-jobs. There are "Training" companies out there taking more money & doing less for the unemployed than the Banks have done for the economy of this country. I have had the pleasure (?) to have used the services of such a company & I think some well paid Journalist should do an exposee of these companies & show the truth of the UK job market.
