What Does 'Passive Candidate' Mean?

Sep 12 12 - 11:12AMAlex Charraudeau, Account Manager Marketing
For a few years the terms passive candidate and passive candidate attraction have been banded about.  But what does a 'passive candidate' look like?  What is 'passive candidate' attraction?

Have a look at this infographic put together by the pioneers of passive candidate engagement LinkedIn

Passive Candidate Attraction

The infographic puts 80% of the working population as being a passive candidate.  These people are not actively looking for new roles... but two-thirds of them might be tempted if provided with the right information and opportunities.

Passive Candidate Engagement...

Here are some of the tips given by LinkedIn to reach out to your passive talent:

1. Reach out to your candidates of choice.

Many will be interested in what you do and what you can offer them.  Make sure you offer them some value!  Just job specs is not value.  Inform them on the current market, what they should be earning and how they can up-skill.

2. Get to know them.

Find out who you share connections with.  Find out where they worked.  Find out what groups they are in.  See what their status updates were.  Follow them on Twitter.  This is ammo for when you come to start your conversation with them.

3. Follow up with them.

Don't leave them in the lurch!  If you make the effort to contact them in the first place you need to keep it up.  You need to continue to engage with them over time.  They may be passive for a long time before they decide to change job - just make sure you are in touch when that time comes.

Interesting stats from LinkedIn on passive candidates. Describing LinkedIn as the "pioneers of passive candidate engagement" is pushing it a bit. "Pioneers of passive candidate engagement via social media" perhaps, as effective recruiters who are experts in their chosen markets have been engaging with passive candidates via more traditional means for years.

That is very good point Peter. LinkedIn is the pioneer from a social networking platform perspective, but recruiters have been targeting passive candidates for a long time via other methods

Interesting stats!

The stats are very interesting especially as I'm new to recruiting via Linked In. To be totally honest I'm not having much success in attracting 'passive candidates'. This may, of course, be down to a poor technique on my part, but to date I've not been 100% convinced that Linked In as a good as source for candidates as expressed.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you

Hi Wendy – I think you have stumbled upon the answer in your comment – you are new to recruiting with LinkedIn. Attracting passive candidates takes time and effort! It isn’t a quick win, but can be really effective.

If you want quick wins then things like Google AdWords on your website or using job boards would be the easiest way to start. That said, don’t give up on LinkedIn! It can be fantastic and as you grow your network, your followers and your authority you will start to reap the rewards.

Thank you Alex, I will persevere!

Your tips above have already been put into action and something I have realised it has prompted me to do is to read personal profiles in more depth.

Once again, many thanks
