As part of our 4MAT Insights series on the Management Team, we speak to James Saunders, on what life is like for an MD and his thoughts on the future of recruitment. 

4MAT: Tell us a bit about yourself?

James Saunders (JS): I’m the MD and owner of 4MAT - a company I’ve been building and growing for the last 15 years. 
We’re a full service digital marketing company that has specialised exclusively in the recruitment space since our inception.  We’re best known for our amazing, world class careers websites.

What’s a typical day like in the 4MAT office for you?

JS: A bit of working in the business and a bit of working on it. 
As MD, I need to drive the culture of the company which is one of the most important aspects of our success. Equally though, I have six direct reportees so there is plenty of operational activity each day! 
I love dealing with clients and talking with passion about online recruitment, either one to one or to large groups of people.

You spoke at the 'Conversation' - an in-house recruitment conference - in Manchester on September 9th. What was the main message that you wanted attendees to take away from your presentation? 

JS: That we’re a long way from where we should be when creating the perfect online candidate experience.  Secondly, that we can learn a lot from customer experience in retail and that - with 4MAT’s help -  it is possible to create an amazing candidate journey.

What do you think are some of the biggest challenges currently facing those working in in-house recruitment? How can they solve them?

JS: I think it's perfecting that customer experience!  It doesn’t matter how effective a recruitment marketing campaign is.  If the candidates go to the careers site and get a poor experience with shoddy Applicant Tracking System integration (ATS), the drop off rate will be huge and a great deal of opportunity will be lost.

How do you envision the future for 4MAT

JS: We hope to work with more and more employers to help them attract more candidates and ever improve their careers web site as the most cost effective source of great quality candidates to their businesses.
