How to Future-Proof your Careers Site
Thursday morning was a time for interviews and insights as recruitment moguls from around London headed to Tavistock Square for the In-House Recruitment Network’s latest industry breakfast.

Presented by 4MAT- and accompanied by an excellent breakfast buffet- the event kicked with a presentation by our very own David Johnston ‘DJ’, whose talk on ‘The Amazon Effect: How to Future-Proof your Career Site’ touched on some of the main issues facing the careers website today. Today’s jobseekers treat hunting for a job the same way as shopping for a new set of clothes, but employers haven’t evolved to keep up with this new trend.

How do you prepare for this?

- You need to make sure that your jobs are Google friendly, and not hidden in your ATS- especially as Google for Jobs is likely to launch in the UK soon.
- You need to create content that people want to read
- You need to make sure that your application process is solid: don’t lose applicants because of an overlong ATS login

There was even a video from Nick Thompson, the Employer Brand, Attraction and Resourcing Operations Manager at Vodafone, who talked about the importance of ATS integration- and how cutting down their application time from eight minutes to under one thanks to their integration with Taleo had resulted in a massive increase in conversion rates for Vodafone.

Following this, the group broke for a roundtable session, allowing attendees alike to talk about what challenges they were facing in the recruitment sector, and swap ideas on how to manage everything including EVP to employer brand.

However, the best was still to come, as DJ led a panel discussion with Adrian Wightman of npower, and Rebecca Martin-Cortez of Travis Perkins, who shared their thoughts and insights from having built their own careers websites, from building in contingency time when building your careers site, to creating a strong employer brand by using your employees to tell your story for you.

The event was a great opportunity for in-house recruiters to mingle, swap views and prepare for the future- and with another industry breakfast on the cards within the next few months, it’s certainly something to get involved in!
